Kumi Masunaga is an internationally acclaimed Japanese percussionist, master drum circle facilitator, and the visionary founder of Drum Jam, a pioneering community music organization based in Hong Kong. Born and raised in Japan, Masunaga developed a profound relationship with music at a remarkably young age. She began classical piano training when she was just three years old, transitioned to the drum kit at age ten, and picked up the guitar by thirteen. This diverse, early foundational training in both melodic and percussive instrumentation instilled in her a deep lifelong belief that rhythm is a fundamental human language capable of transcending cultural and linguistic barriers.

In search of new personal and professional horizons, Masunaga relocated to Hong Kong over thirty years ago, arriving as an expatriate open to what the dynamic city had to offer. Rather than pursuing conventional career paths in finance, corporate corporate administration, or language instruction, she felt a powerful calling to help others "find their voice" through collective rhythm. Her artistic path was forever altered in 1999 after a chance meeting with a Senegalese drummer, an encounter that sparked a deep obsession with traditional West African percussion. Determined to study these rhythms at their root, she began embarking on extensive solo trips across Africa, the Americas, and Asia, embedding herself within rural villages to learn indigenous ceremonial beats directly from local masters.

The definitive turning point in Masunaga’s career arrived in 2001 when she discovered the formal art of modern drum circle facilitation under the mentorship of global pioneer Arthur Hull. Empowered by this training, she officially founded Drum Jam in Hong Kong that same year, creating an experiential company built around communal music-making. To establish her presence locally, she launched a monthly community drumming initiative outside the Hong Kong Cultural Centre supported by the local government. This public gathering ran successfully for 18 years, introducing tens of thousands of ordinary citizens, families, and tourists to the unfiltered joy of spontaneous collective percussion.

Over the past two decades, Masunaga has elevated her craft from localized entertainment into a highly scientific and acclaimed clinical methodology. She holds specialized credentials as a certified Music Medicine facilitator, a Rhythm2Recovery practitioner, and an official global trainer for Village Music Circles.
